PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

Dr. Tanya Alderete heads the ECLIPSE Laboratory. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder in the Department of Integrative Physiology. Dr. Alderete is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at USC and the Colorado School of Public Health at CU Anschutz.

Dr. Alderete is broadly trained in clinical and translational research, environmental epidemiology, and omics’ research methods with a publication record of over 80 peer-reviewed articles related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, health disparities, and the adverse health impacts of environmental toxicants.

Overall, her research fuses clinical research with epidemiological approaches to evaluate the contribution of environmental exposures to the development of chronic disease, including ambient and traffic-related air pollution, as well as persistent organic pollutants.

Dr. Alderete’s research includes some of the first investigations to show that exposure to air pollutants contributes to the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes in youth as well as the composition and function of the gut microbiome across the life course.

To date, Dr. Alderete has received several pilot awards, an NIEHS K99/R00, Health Effects Institute (HEI) Rosenblith New Investigator Award, an NIEHS R01, and co-leads Project 1 of the Southern California Center for Chronic Health Disparities in Latino Families and Children (SCC-CHDLFC).
